Advancing Maternal and Child Health Through Investigation of Fetal and Pregnancy Biology

Biomedical Innovations Building (BMI), Opened 2020
Home to Cutting-Edge Translational Medicine

Basic Science Discovery

The domain of Basic Science Discovery within the Dunlevie Maternal Fetal Medicine Center leverages a variety of basic science technologies to investigate developmental biology, immunology, reproductive, stem cell and/or perinatal biology of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics conditions. The Center scientists produce new findings on placental biology, human embryogenesis, and multiomics of pregnancy every day.

The Biomedical Innovations Building (BMI) is home to the Basic Science Discovery arm of the Dunlevie MFM Center. Housing a synergetic mix of disciplines, BMI is home to several School of Medicine departments including Obstetrics and Gynecology. In a central location and steps away from Stanford's adult and children's hospital, the Basic Science Discovery labs create breakthoughs in everything from placental biology to stem cell research.

The Center faculty of the Basic Science Discovery domain work with the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) and the Stem Cell Institute.

You can learn more about the individual labs of the Center faculty on their websites:

I'm excited for the prospect of our work on the health outcomes of mothers and children. The foundation for new discoveries is our existing cutting-edge research on human pregnancy, placentation and fetal development which this transformative gift enables us to use to the fullest potential. Together with our translational and clinical research colleagues, we'll make a difference.
