Successful PRIHSM Retreat Fosters Community Engagement and Innovation

On Tuesday, November 19, the PRIHSM (PReventing Inequities in Hemorrhage-related Severe Maternal morbidity) team hosted a successful retreat at Stanford Research Park. This event brought together approximately 50 attendees from various projects and components of PRIHSM, including members of the Center's Community Advisory Board (CAB), community partners, and guests from local hospital affiliates.

The retreat, facilitated by Erika Burnett and Nicole Kemp of the Women of Color Collaborative (WOCC), was designed to achieve several key objectives:

Enhancing Community Engagement

The retreat focused on identifying and discussing community engagement approaches across all PRIHSM projects and components. Key discussions included:

  • Integrating equitable engagement practices across all PRIHSM activities, partnerships, and outreach.
  • Developing a process to bi-directionally identify and engage with community partners who align with PRIHSM principles and focus on equity.
  • Exploring opportunities for optimal community engagement integration across PRIHSM.

Building Relationships and Connections

The retreat was a unique opportunity for attendees to strengthen collaborations and build meaningful relationships among themselves in person. This was facilitated through various interactive sessions and group activities designed to foster a sense of community and networking.

Increasing Understanding Across the Center

Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the ongoing work and initiatives across PRIHSM. This included sharing insights, strategies, and best practices to ensure a cohesive and impactful approach to community engagement.

Principal Investigators of the PRIHSM Center Suzan Carmichael, PhD, MS, and Yasser El-Sayed, MD, commented that they are incredibly grateful for the collaborative spirit and intellectual generosity exhibited at the retreat by all participants, and added that the exceptional guidance provided by Erika Burnett and Nicole Kemp of the Women of Color Collaborative to the dedicated and detail-oriented administration and planning from Rebecca Mobley, Angela Clear, Kendra Smith, and Anna Girsen, MD, PhD, was instrumental in making this retreat a success

The Retreat Planning Subcommittee, comprising Angela Clear, Deirdre Lyell, MD, Rebecca Mobley, Nicholas Nugent, Susan Perez, Julia Simard, and Christa Sakowski, all played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the retreat.

A significant step forward in PRIHSM's mission to deepen community engagement, the retreat was an event that fostered innovative thinking and celebrated the collective work of its members and partners. We look forward to leveraging the insights and strategies discussed during the retreat and together make a lasting impact by reducing postpartum hemorrhage in California.
